Northern Zealand, with its long stretches of coastline, good bathing conditions and views across to Sweden, has always been a popular holiday destination. Some of Denmark's largest lakes and forests can be found here, as well as some of its most important Royal residences.

Located in the heart of the North Zealand countryside, Fredensborg Palace is the home of the Danish Royal Family in the spring and autumn, and opens its doors to the public each July. The palace's attractive gardens are a popular destination in their own right, and are open all year round. Other royal abodes include Frederiksborg Palace in Hillerød and Kronborg, Hamlet's castle, in the northern coastal town of Elsinore (Helsingør in Danish), which is open to the public throughout the year. To the south of Elsinore, the National Museum of Science and Technology and the Aviation and Transport Museum are both popular family destinations.
